The world changed November 8th. In a victory that surprised pollsters, political pundits, American citizens, and even his own campaign, Donald J. Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States.
Repeal and Replace
During his eighteen-month campaign, Trump promised to repeal and replace Obamacare on day one of his presidency with “something terrific,” and there’s no reason to believe he won’t make every effort to do that.
The Republican-led House and Senate have wanted to dismantle the health reform law ever since it was passed, and with a Republican in the White House they will resume their efforts with full force.
Impact on Employers
For employers and individuals who have struggled with rising premiums, watered-down benefits, shrinking networks, confusing regulations, and unwanted mandates, this may be welcome news. But because we don’t yet have all the details about the “replace” part of “repeal and replace,” this transition can also be a bit scary. They may not have liked the Affordable Care Act, but at least it was the devil they knew. It remains to be seen whether its replacement will truly be a better solution.
Impact on Brokers
For brokers, this transition will mean slowly unlearning what they’ve spent the past seven years studying and advising their clients about and once again re-learning how to sell insurance. To say the least, 2017 will be a confusing and challenging year during which insurance advisers will need good, reliable information about what provisions are going away and when, what provisions will take their place, and what this means for their clients and for their pocket book.
Knowledge Is Power
At LearnBenefits, we believe that knowledge is power. We also believe that times of uncertainty can lead to opportunities for those who are “in the know.” We saw it with Obamacare and will no doubt see it again with its probable repeal. Brokers who are better informed than their competition will grow their business; advisers who are uninformed will struggle to hang on to what they have.
LearnBenefits provides education and training for health insurance agents and brokers and the clients they serve. For the foreseeable future, our focus will be on the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act, the replacement plan that will be introduced by President-Elect Trump and the Republican-controlled House and Senate, the impact on the insurance industry, and the opportunities that will emerge from this transition.
